Especially the idea of the \u203apolite society\u2039 was in the combination of standards concerning conduct, social behaviour, interests and ways of living a fundamental influence that not only regulated the depictions of persons but also of their surroundings. The surrounding as indicator of a certain way of living and moral standards was as important as the depiction of the persons themselves and positioned them socially. Through the standards of the \u203apolite society\u2039 the interior gained an importance that surpassed the traditional background of the portrait and is to be seen as one of the forerunners of the independent interior of the 19th century. \/ L\u2019essai explore les diff\u00e9rentes influences et les conditions sociologiques, philosophiques, historiques et artistiques qui forment l\u2019\u00e9volution de la \u203aconversation piece\u2039.
