They were the result of a close collaboration between the Raiatean priest and master navigator Tupaia, and Captain James Cook and other members of his crew. It is argued that Equiano consciously appropriates Enlightenment ideals to claim a sense of national belonging and citizenship. This essay investigates the sound of the ship measuring ceremonies held at the Whampoa anchorage near Canton, in which musical and non-musical sonic expressions of sovereignty (for instance, ceremonial band music, canon salutes and gong-ringing) mixed together to form a soundscape of the global eighteenth century. \/ Depuis 1700 environ, jusqu\u2019au d\u00e9clenchement de la Premi\u00e8re guerre de l\u2019opium en 1839, la rencontre entre la Chine et l\u2019Occident \u00e9tait audible.
